WELCOME AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST IN OUR #YOURCOLORYOURCAUSE MOVEMENT!
In a world that is constantly dividing us, by making us choose sides to a cause. A society that limits us and tells us who we need to be. A government who tells us we are not good enough. My personal life story inspired this movement. My experiences taught me many lessons along the way. I remember being at George Washington Elementary, everyday as I got off the bus with a hundred other first grade children screaming as they entered the hallway to go to their classes. At the top of our hallways was a picture of each President from George Washington to Bill Clinton, all old white men in fancy clothes. Social Studies class would teach us about how much progression we have had, but as a little girl I wondered why there was no girl like me next to those men. One day at home I am watching TV with my brother. President Bill Clinton came on the television and I started screaming for my dad and my mom to come to the room. When they arrived, I asked them as I pointed and put my hands all over Bill Clinton's face on the T.V., "What does he do?" My dad responds,"He helps people all over the country by making sure everyone has food, to build roads and to make sure all kids go to school."
In that moment, at 6 years old, time froze. It was like bells were going off in my head and heart and as time re-emerged, I was jumping up and down in excitement that I found my dream! I started telling my family, that I am going to be president when I grow up. That lasted all of sixty seconds, when I hear my 8 and half year old brother, protest, "Girls can not be the President. Don't you see the pictures in school, there has never been a girl president because only boys can do it!" As I clenched my fist and grinded my baby teeth, I said, "Mom! Tell him I can be the President!" My mom says, "Nene, she can be president." My brother proceeds with his strong protest, "Okay, mom you are lying to her because there has never been a girl president!" My mom then says, "Pero papa, maybe she isn't old enough to be president yet and she's going to be the first." My dad, chimes in, "Yeah your sister could be the first!" In my brother's unbelieving tone he says, "I'll believe it when I see it."
My brother wasn't wrong about his beliefs. He was stating a fact about the American Political System and patriarch we have all grown up in. His statements still remain true to this day. While this story was one of the first times I experienced a limitation, it wasn't the last. When I enlisted in the United States Marine Corps at sixteen joining the delayed entry program and went off to basic training, many people told me I wouldn't make it out of bootcamp and become a United States Marine because it was too hard for women to pass the physical standards. The USMC only had 4% of women in 2007 when I was 17 and on my way to Parris Island to join November Company! I graduated bootcamp that October.
Years later at the age of 20, I experienced the same limiting comments, about me becoming a Financial Advisor without completing my bachelors degree. I was in school part time and many people didn't believe that I would be able to pass the industry exams. By age 21, I was a fully licensed working Financial Advisor in the industry. I even made a career out of it! That same year a few month before I passed my exam, I became a homeowner. I was told by many I couldn't by a home that young. The messages we get everyday tell us what we can and can not be. Ultimately, the choice that we have to make, it to decide to listen or to fight back!
Our #YOURCOLORYOURCAUSE movement is about standing up against the current limitations American Society places on us. It is about fighting back and saying that the issues that affect our lives deserve to be heard and addressed. Most of all sending a message to the governmental establishment that we the people can have a cause that is important to us and join others in their causes as well by uniting under one movement. United we stand.
